Fr. Richard Anthony D'Souza, SJ, an alumnus of the Department of Physics at St. Xavier’s College (Batch of 2002), is now making history as the first Asian Jesuit to head the Vatican Observatory, one of the world’s oldest astronomical research institutions.
A true archaeologist of the stars, Fr. Richard has dedicated his life to studying the origins of galaxies and exploring the cosmic mysteries that surround us. After completing his Master’s in Physics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, he earned his Doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Munich, focusing on the formation and evolution of galaxies. He later pursued post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan, USA. His research has been published in leading international scientific journals and has earned him worldwide recognition. His story is a testament to what passion, curiosity, and relentless dedication can achieve. Fr. Richard continues to inspire generations of students and dreamers to reach for the stars.
